As we gather today with family and/or friends let us try not to forget the reason why this country was founded. It definitely was not founded so that others could come to this country to be offended by our beliefs. It was founded upon the belief that all men were created equal and that all men had the right to follow their beliefs without offending anyone or without being told that they offended someone and that they had to hide their beliefs under the bed or in a closet. If the founding fathers of our country were around today more than likely they would be ashamed of what is happening. In a country where a lot of blood was shed for a variety of different freedoms, freedom of religion being one of them, we should not feel as if we cannot pray where we want, when we want or how we want. How we believe and our faith in our God should not offend anyone because it is our right to to believe in God.
We live in a society that is so afraid of offending others by our beliefs that we seem to forget how offended we should be by others telling us that our prayer, our Bible and our belief in our God offends them! Those who say that we offend them tend to forget the fact that they might just be offending Christians who just want to follow their faith. There is no difference! If we totally give into the minority who claim to be offended by our beliefs then we are not only letting down all those people who have ever died defending our rights but we are also letting down our God. We are also offending God and by doing so we look as if we are ashamed of Him! And that is not what this country was founded on!
We could take a lesson from the following:
“Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our school s. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, not Australia.”
John Howard-President of Australia
Lord, help us to keep our gaze on You and only You! The more we look at You, the less everything else matters. May we desire nothing but to please You and let us not be influenced or intimidated by accusations of offense because we wish to follow You, praise You, worship You and pray to you in our own way, wherever we want and when we want. Give us the courage and the strength to ignore the insults and the demands of those who don’t believe the way in which we do.
Have a safe and blessed July 4th!
