“Do you want to be well?” (John 5:6)
In John 5:1-16, the question “Do you want to be well?” was a simple question that required either yes or no. More than likely all of us would say yes if we were in the man’s place and someone was offering us some kind of healing and relief. So you’d think that this man would say the same thing. Otherwise why was he spending all of his time at a pool known for healing powers? Instead of offering Jesus an enthusiastic yes in reply he laments, “I have no one to put me in the pool.”
So, is it that all his family and friends have given up on him and have abandoned him? Or is he the one that has given up on himself and hope and has himself abandoned the support of his community? It doesn’t matter, either way, it appears that he simply had resigned himself to a life of loneliness and want. However, Jesus knows better, He Himself is the One who is going to immerse this man in God’s healing power. As long as Jesus is in the world, He will love and heal, physically, spiritually and emotionally!
This is the incredible nature of true love! It always looks for the best for the beloved, not something just good enough, but the best! The harsh realities of life had taken their toll on this man, and Jesus decided to do more than something to cheer him up. He set the man free!
It is really easy even for us to resign ourselves to a life of suffering. We seem to just settle for just a little “trickle” of grace in the form of a quiet acceptance or just a little bit of relief. What we need to understand is, that Jesus is standing right in front of us, ready and willing to unleash a flood of His grace. He always loves and He always wants the best for us.
If all of us, reading these words were to just step out in faith in a new area in our lives or seek a new faith in an old area of our lives just imagine the joy that would fill the heavens. So let’s all try and tell Jesus, with a surge of faith in His abundant power, that we believe He is the One sent to help us all!
“Lord Jesus, I know that you want to help me and my loved ones today. Give me the faith to ask for healing and then to trust in you.
Ezekiel 47: 1-9, 12
Psalm 46: 2-3, 5-6, 8-9
Lord we bow down before you now humbled and broken searching for healing.
Tired of believing that we are suppose to completely accept a life without true joy.
Help us to see that we don’t have to accept just a little bit of grace or relief.
Instead show us that Your Son Jesus is standing before us, ready to shower us completely with His grace.
