“We are the handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared.” (Ephesians 2:10)
According to St. Paul, God has fashioned not just our outer appearance but our inner lives as well. And the clothing that He has provided for our tailored interior is a very unique set of “good works” that are perfectly suited to the gifts and talents, as well as the insights and personalities that He has given to each of us.
What God wants us to do is to open our minds and open our hearts and then open up our spiritual closet and then take a moment to try on what’s in there. There might be some things that we will feel very comfortable doing because some of these good works seem to perfectly match our preparation and talent. However, there also might be things in this Spiritual closet that we might think doesn’t quite fit us and that someone else might be better at doing it. But we need not be afraid because God is there to help us step into these new things and help us discover abilities that we never realized we had.
Perhaps you are a person that has always hoped for parenthood but in your closet you find that is not what God has planned for you, instead He has designed you for foster parenting to welcome the unwanted until they find their “forever home”. Or maybe you saw yourself as a catechist in your church, but God would prefer that you put on a different garment, one with a home based ministry where you can spend time caring for an elderly parent or parishioner that cannot make it to Mass.
We need to be willing to allow our Creator and Designer to work with us and believe that He will be patient with us and work with us until we have discovered a perfect fit between us and the garments of service that He lays on our shoulders.
“Creator Lord, thank you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Give me the courage to grow into your good plan.”
2 Chronicles 36: 14-16, 19-23
Psalm 137: 1-6
John 3: 14-21
Lord, show us that what You have planned for us is nothing to be afraid of.
Let us realize that what we think we are good at just might not be what You know we can do and do well.
Help us to be comfortable even in doing something that we may fear we might fail at.
Help us to see what You see in us so we might be able to accomplish what it is You want us to do.
