“My Word…shall not return to Me void.” (Isaiah 55:11)
For as long as we can recall, politicians and merchants have always made claims about what they will do or what their products can do, and often their claims are filled with falsehoods, something that we all have experienced. However, this is not so with God! He tells us that His Word goes out and it never fails to accomplish His will and He’s completely right about that! Consider the Word that comes from God’s mouth.
His Word is creative. Consider the very first chapter of Genesis when God said “Let there be light” and there was light. Just the same with day and night, earth and sea, plants and animals and all the rest of creation. As St. John said, all things came to be through that Word. When a Word goes forth from God, it brings into being something that never was before, life. It establishes in all of us what is lacking so that His life in us can flourish, so that our faith and our relationships can deepen.
His Word is authoritative. Often this might suggest ideas of government, commands, and obedience. However, authoritative can also mean trusted, true, reliable, and dependable. This is who our God is. And He is for us. When He commands, He also offers us the grace to obey His Words. Our obedience to Him brings us life, because in everything, He works for good with us. His authoritative Word is never going to change or vary. It is never going to deceive or manipulate us. His Word is just solid, true, dependable, and trustworthy.
His Word is near to us. His creative Word that we all can rely on and trust and it surpasses everything else, is always near to us, as close as our hearts. We long for life, or peace, joy or patience and His word, which is always close to us, can bring that to us. We just need to ask God for what we are lacking in our lives, whether it be healing, forgiveness, a new start in life, break old habits, whatever it is, He will speak the Words we need and if we take up His Words, it will accomplish His desires for us.
His Word is alive! Jesus is the Word of God in the flesh. Jesus became man and dwelt among us and overcame death.
There is nothing in this world that can conquer the Word of God. With this news we should rejoice in that Word each and every day of our lives, we need to read it, seek its guidance and invite it into our lives and watch the fruit that it will bear.
“Father, speak your Word to me today. I long to be made alive with you.”
Psalm 34:4-7, 16-19
This Lent help us O’ Lord to hear Your Word more clearly.
Help us to see that Your Word is honest and trustworthy and nothing false hides behind it.
Show us how we can reach out and hold onto Your Word so we can find the peace and joy for our lives that You so much want for us.
Teach us to trust in Your Word and let it live within us all the days of our lives.
