We Are Alive Forever
“Whoever keeps my word will never see death.” John 8:51
I had the blessing of being a student of the saintly theologian Cardinal Avery Dulles. I remember him saying something that struck me deeply. He told us that eternal life is not an insurance policy that you cash in after death. He went on to explain that, because of our baptism, this eternal life has already begun.
In today’s Scripture, when Jesus promised his disciples that they “will never see death,” many thought he was possessed. We all die. But he was not speaking of physical death. Rather, he was referring to the eternal life in which we, his disciples, have already begun to share.
The seed of eternity is already in us. Death cannot destroy this seed or us. In Jesus, we are alive now and forever.
