March 16th Second Sunday of Lent

A Glimpse of Heaven

“And he was transfigured before them.”  Matthew 17:2

Ever wonder what heaven will be like? I certainly do, especially as I get older. In today’s gospel, we are given a glimpse; Jesus is transfigured before them and his face shines “like the sun” and his clothes become “as white as light.”

It is no accident that this encouraging vision is given to the disciples shortly before Jesus suffers and dies. It was meant to bolster their faith for the challenging days ahead.

You and I are in the season of Lent. This season is associated with fasting and self-denial and sufferings are not ends in themselves. We are on a journey toward our own Easter transfiguration.

When the hard times come, it might be good to raise our eyes and remember what wonders the Lord has in store for us. We, too, will be transfigured. We, too, will shine like the Son.
