When Jesus was asked “How often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” He responded, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy times seven times.” Jesus did not say to forgive only as much as the other person deserves, but to forgive without end. Forgiveness is an expression of God’s love, as much for the forgiver as the forgiven.
When we limit our forgiveness to those who we believe deserves it, we are putting limits on the love of God, and limiting ourselves. As we forgive others, we release resentment and envision the highest and best for them.
We have also made mistakes in our own lives. As we forgive others, we forgive ourselves. Then we are open to the full expression of God’s never ending love.
